Introducing Our New School Mascot
‘Kotare Te Momoho - The Successful Kingfisher’
This week our students and staff were excited to see the reveal of our new school mascot. ‘Kotare Te Momoho - The Successful Kingfisher’ has swooped in and landed and will help us build on our treasured identity. He will also act as the guardian for all that we do at Omokoroa No.1 School, reminding us all of our values and No.1 Learner attributes. Kotare are a NZ Native bird and live around Omokoroa.
Pet Day 2018One of our favourite days on the school calendar is, Pet Day.
In the morning, the children are busy in their classrooms making all their wonderful creations. After lunch, all the fun begins when the pets arrive. Judging is difficult, as all the pets are wonderful. Ribbons are decided. Another wonderful day at Pet Day. |

Year 8 Visit to The Field Days
On Thursday last week my class, Room one went to the Field Days. I woke up to the sound of my alarm, I pulled the curtains, a blanket of fog covered the ground and I could tell it was going to be a beautiful day.
We were on the road by 7:40 and in my car group we were listening to music and seeing who could sing the loudest. Tatum and Poppy had a yawning competition that was really funny.
When we got there we walked down to the ticket shop and bought our tickets. As I gazed over the fields and saw people and shops for miles,
I was really excited. First we went through the gates and straight to the Innovation centre where I interviewed this Rural Fire Officer about his job which I found really interesting. He said the hardest part about his job was working with people that don’t listen to messages, which I can imagine is very hard.
Next we walked past all the big trucks and saw how they worked and what they did - that was cool. We also went to lots of different kinds of shops and one man was selling Cat phones they were really cool. They had a thermal camera so that you could find your animals in the dark and he said it was good for hunting as well.
That was an amazing experience I shall always remember.

Fresh Moves Dance Festival 2108
On Wednesday 13th June, Omokoroa No. 1 School performed at Baycourt Theatre as part of the Fresh Moves Dance Festival. Fresh Moves is non competitive and allows kids of all abilities and ages to take part. The one thing everyone has in common is their love of dance.
Our performance was themed ‘Weather With You’ (after the Crowded House song) and our focus was on showing the weather map and the changing weather patterns that can occur. We began with sunshine and the tropics, then we raced with the wind and marvelled at the grace of snow. We felt the excitement of thunderstorms, the devastation of cyclones and finished with the scorching heat that causes drought and creates deserts. We finished with a reference to climate change and the uncertainty of weather in the future.
The kids, who had been creating, practicing, reviewing and changing their group dances for just over three months, performed wonderfully and certainly the panel of experts, who gave feedback at the end of the dance, were very impressed. We were awarded an excellence certificate for inventive choreography.
‘Fresh Moves’ is not possible without the help of family and friends so a big thank you to everyone who got involved. Especially to Ali Lawrence and S.J. Little for their help with coaching some dance groups, Wendy Newton for loaning us the fabulous umbrellas and all the parents who helped with costuming, hair and make-up.

Year 7 and 8 Camp in Auckland
On May the 7th, rooms 1, 2 & 3 headed off to Willow Park Christian Camp in Auckland. Once we had all hopped onto the bus and got settled in the bus erupted in chatter. The first stop was the Miranda Shorebird Centre. The students all set off on their journey to see the Shorebirds. Once we arrived at the Shorebird viewing area, everyone fell silent. Once we stepped foot in the lookout, we gazed out at the birds walking along the glistening sand. Our second stop for the day was the Auckland Museum. When we arrived everyone split off into groups of 5 or 6. After that was sorted out, we explored the incredible museum. We saw an exhibition about Maori travellers and some others about the War. The main reason we went to the Museum was to have a look around the Anne Frank exhibition. It was really interesting reading about her life. When we arrived at camp everyone settled down, had dinner and had a games night. We played dodgeball and soccer. It was a fantastic way to end our first day at camp.
It was the second day of camp. Today we were going to make movies at Mind Lab and go to explore Motat. Our first stop was making movies. We split off into our groups, then made and edited our movies. Once we had all given it our best shot at finishing the movies, we devoured our lunch in a victorian style village. Afterwards, we went and explored Motat. One of the displays at Motat was a sailing simulator. What you had to do was get on a bike and do a fifteen second sprint. Your thighs definitely got a work out if you did it, it wasn’t easy! Another display was when you got dressed up in clothes from the 19th century. All the outfits made me look like my great, great, great grandma. It was really incredible looking around at all the different displays. When we finished exploring everyone made their way to the tram. We all thought it was really cool riding around Motat on the tram. When we eventually arrived back at camp we settled down, had dinner and got ready for our skits. Some of the acts were jump jam, hula hooping and plays. A personal favourite was one by the adults which was very entertaining. Finally everyone clambered into their cabins and eventually fell asleep.
On Wednesday 9th we headed off to The Maritime Museum for an action packed day. We were separated into two groups with group one sailing under the Auckland Harbour Bridge, where we were able to point out an AJ Hackett bungy jump underneath the bridge. While group two were busy wondering about random objects and how they may help you if you were stranded in the Auckland Islands. After 30 minutes or so, the groups were swapped, then we were put into the same groups for the Auckland Museum and explored The Maritime Museum. It was fantastic! We were able to send morse code messages, play in a boat simulator and look at loads of huge boats. After arriving back to Willow Park we donned a warm jacket and at 7pm we set of for the Stardome.Once we arrived at the Stardome we explored their interactive exhibit on space which was fascinating. Not long after, we were called into the Stardome and settled down on their special stargazing seats. Looking up you could notice there were screens all across the dome ceiling which lit up and began screening a show called, Incoming. During Incoming we all learned about the asteroid belt and the millions of asteroids inside it.For example, 4 Vesta is one of the largest asteroids in our asteroid belt, has a mean diameter of 525 kilometers. We were then shown a few constellations, then we were lead outside to look at the four moons of Jupiter.
On the final day of camp we had to pack up early and leave right after breakfast to Kelly Tarltons! Before entering Kelly Tarltons we had a quick morning tea outside. We were then separated into the same groups from Maritime Museum. Group one was taken into the teaching room to learn about penguins, rock pools and hermit crabs. We even touched penguin toenails! Then we were swapped around and Group one were sent off to explore Kelly Tarltons. We looked at turtles, seahorses, sharks, stingrays and a whole lot more.It was incredible! Did you know that Kelly Tarltons started a Turtle Rehabilitation program in 1995 and is the only place in NZ that has this? We then began our long journey home, eventually ending back at Omokoroa No.1

On Friday the 9th of March it was the year 5-8 school swimming sports. Today was the perfect day to do it. There was not a cloud in the sky and the beautiful sun was glistening on to the pool making it look like someone sprinkled a bunch of glitter in it. Everyone was all dressed up in their house colours, sitting under tents, ready to get the swimming sports underway. All the houses were chanting their house chants, with their house leaders leading the way. Everyone knew they had to swim their hardest today because if you placed, you would get house points for your house. You would get 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd. The houses were Mauao (Red), Motuhoa (Yellow), Rangiwaea (Blue) and Matakana( Green).
The first race of the day was the Year 5 boys and girls 25m butterfly. All the competitors made their way up to the starting blocks. Mr Pentecost blew his whistle, causing it to let out an ear piercing screech. All the kids stood up on the diving blocks ready to start the race. He honked the air horn and all the year fives went sailing off the diving blocks and into the the crystal clear water below. There was a loud racket from the crowd, cheering on the people from their house. You could see the water sloshing along behind the swimmers as their powerful legs urged them closer and closer to the finish line. That was a great race to start off our swimming sports.
The races after butterfly were breaststroke. The competitors took their place on the diving board and plunged into the pool. Everyone sang their house chants as the the students swam liked octopi and touched the end wall. Mr Joe went around the tents with a whiteboard showing everyone the house points. Mauao was in first place, Matakana second, Rangiwaea third and Motuhoa fourth. The next races were freestyle, followed by backstroke.
After lunch, it was finally time for the race that everyone was waiting for… The House Medley. The house leaders from each house chose 8 people to compete in the relay. HONK!!! the race was underway. This time the houses quickly went from a chant to a screaming mess. One by one, the competitors dived into the pool making a colossal splash behind them. The race was over! Motuhoa had won!
Mr Joe went around once again with his whiteboard and showed everyone the scores for the day. Motuhoa was first, Matakana second, Mauao third, and finally Rangiwaea fourth. It was a fun day!

Singer Songwriter Kath Bee Visit
On Thursday this week (March 15th) we had a visit from Kath Bee. Kath is a well known singer songwriter of children’s songs. The second song she wrote and one of her most popular songs is ‘Individuality’, which was written in 2001. Overall, Kath has been working with children’s music for over twenty years.
Today Kath sang songs, accompanied by her guitar, on a wide range of topics, from ‘Dragons Under The Bed’ to ‘Saving Money’ to ‘Dad I Want To Be A Camel’. She talked about the parts of songs and how they are used, encouraging the kids to have a go at writing their own. Altogether, Kath has written and recorded over 50 songs so she knows what she’s talking about!
Some kids also were lucky enough to win a prize of a balloon animal. Kath also showed her young audience just how easy it is to make a balloon animal by yourself. So beware parents, if you find your kid wants to make sausage dog balloon animals, you’ll know why. Kath is a very talented lady with a lovely bubbly personality and we hope to see her whenever she might be passing through Tauranga again. Check her out on Kath Bee: Songs4Kids

Year 4/5/6 Camp to Raglan
Room 4, 5 and 14 had a fantastic time at Camp Raglan. It was our school’s first time at this camp and we will definitely be returning in two years time! The rain did not deter us from the many activities such as: BMX, Archery, Shooting, Confidence Course, and Flying Fox (to name only a few). The highlight for many was the Surfing Lesson. The waves were great for beginners and everyone had success on the boards. The highlight for others was the awesome food from camp. Thanks to all you parents for providing us with heaps of baking and fruit and thanks for putting up with your tired, grubby, wet little campers when they returned.
Middles Waka Ama Day
Room 5,14 and 4 spent a wonderful couple of hours down at Omokoroa Beach doing Waka Ama. The weather and children were outstanding. It was a great experience for all involved. Thanks to all the parents who took transport and a special thank you to Mrs Webster, Les and Lawrence from the Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club. This was a great addition to our Oceans and Coastlines Unit of work, and a great start to our next focus of team work and team building.

Introducing Craig Pentecost Principal Omokoroa No.1 School
I am honoured, and very proud, to have been selected by the Omokoroa No.1 School Board of Trustees and lead the learning across the learning community. My responsibility as the Principal is to ensure that all children continue to receive the highest quality education within a safe, respectful and supportive environment at Omokoroa No.1 School.
I have 20 years’ experience within a wide range of educational environments across New Zealand. I have also taught in Australia, London and America.
Over the past 6 years I have been the Principal of Matangi School in Hamilton and Te Awamutu Primary School in Te Awamutu. I am happily married and have three amazing children aged 15, 13 and 8. I was raised in Christchurch, and I have always had a passion for sport and a love of the outdoors.
Omokoroa No.1 School offers me a unique opportunity to work with a school community that thrives on compassion, community support, quality teaching and learning, innovation, and above all else…its STUDENTS!
I firmly believe that creating strong relationships and having effective communication is an integral part of everyday life, personally and professionally.
For me the wider school community plays a significant role in the success of its students and the school. I encourage the school community to engage in a wide range of experiences, whether it is supporting learning experiences in the class, sports teams or outdoor education programmes.
As an educational leader, I provide opportunities for staff to develop their learning styles and encourage them to explore new ways of learning with a ‘Growth Mindset’, to motivate and challenge them, and provide purposeful learning experiences for students. I value contributions from all members of the school community, provide positive and constructive feedback, identify personal strengths, and use a distributive leadership model.
The opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of the students, staff, caregivers and the wider community at Omokoroa No.1 School excites me as an educational leader. I am very grateful to everyone at Omokoroa No.1 School for making me feel so welcome and supported in my new role.

Junior School Bridges Trip
On Friday the 10th of November the junior School went to town to investigate the local bridges. We were bused in an set of for our adventure from the Te Awanui waka. It was then up to the rose garden and the Mission Cemetery. We then had some morning tea underneath the Tauranga Harbour Bridge. After that we then ambled along the waterfront, under the Trinity Wharf Hotel, past the whark along to the Hairy Maclary animals and the playground.
Then it was time for our sausages and chips for lunch. Feeling full, when needed to walk off our lunch, so off to the Matapihi Bridge we went. The children had fun playing in the long grass on the other side of the bridge.
Finally many exhausted children and parents crossed back over the bridge to catch the bus back to school.
It was a wonderful day out.
Thank you to all the wonderful parents who came on the trip with us.

From the 19th to the 20th of September, 16 year 8s, along with many helpful parents, Mrs Mc Ewan and Mr Broadhurst, embarked on a spectacular adventure. For many it was their first time skiing and although others had done it many times before, we all had a blast after two days of great skiing. Both days were blue skies and we had perfect snow that made the most of our amazing experience. After dining at the Chateau, learning how to ski and creating some of the best times in our lives, we all made so many happy memories, thanks to Mrs McEwan and Mr Broadhurst.

A crisp wave of icy-cold air surged round my exposed skin. My mouth exploded into a cheerful smile as I effortlessly slid down the smooth, snowy mountain. Adrenaline rushed through my veins, while my skis directed me farther and farther across Whakapapa, managing to escort me down the steep slopes.
My eyes gaze above me and examine the astonishing view of Tongariro, Whakapapa and the distant sighting of Mt Egmont emerging through the pristine clouds. Peaceful blue skies surround me, stretching out to infinity. As if they were in autopilot, my skis merely miss the slippery surface of an icy rock. My skis do a parallel turn, spraying up glistening snow in every direction
My heart beats dramatically against my chest, as I approach my favourite slope in Rock Garden. I forcefully slide my skis together, letting them advance down the shimmery drop.
I let my hands fly freely as the cool breeze brushes past my body. Allowing my skis to lead me, I focus on the snow that shimmers like a thousand stars, the mesmerising landscape that constantly catches my attention and the breathtaking feeling of zooming down the mountain, having the time of my life.

Our school has been very fortunate to have 17 students visiting from Hibarigaoka Primary School near Osaka in Japan. They were accompanied by their Principal and two other teachers. They arrived on Thursday 17 August and were welcomed onto the school grounds by our kapahaka group, with a wonderful powhiri. This was the kapahaka group’s first official performance, since being formed at the beginning of Term 2. The group capably welcomed the students and their teachers onto the school.
This was the first visit we have had from children from this school. It was 15 months ago when we were approached about hosting students from a Japanese School. The Principal and a member of the School Ministry came and spoke with Mr Broadhurst and Mrs Webster and settled on a time frame for the visit. At first, it was to be twelve children, but this was extended due to the strong interest from the Japanese students. There was thorough planning and careful consideration was given to ensuring that each child would be happy with their host family.
A feeling of pride and honour to be part of a new journey for our students was displayed by the staff and students.
All the children in the school have benefitted from this very positive cultural experience.
Thanks to Mr Joe for making this wonderful video to capture the special occasion.

Time to say goodbye
The Japanese children all had a wonderful time at our school with many friendships made. During their time here, they to learned English with Mrs Green, visited the Rotorua attractions, spent time with their host families and were immersed in a New Zealand classroom environment in the afternoons.
It was sad to say goodbye, however we look forward to seeing them again, with the possibility of a return exchange.

Wacky Hair and Pyjama Day for Star Jam
Today was a special day at our school. Everyone was dressed up in pyjamas and made their hair look amazing.
Children at No.1 School enjoy dressing up.
There was a big parade held under the dome. We paraded around in our class and everyone smiled, cheered and laughed. Some people skipped and danced.
We did Jump Jam in our pyjamas. The money raised was for Star Jam. It is for people with disabilities.
It is a bit crazy dancing in pyjamas. Most of the teachers dressed up too. After Star Jam, the winners for the best dressed and wackiest hair were announced. They were awesome.
Over $400 was raised for Star Jam. Well done everyone.

School Visit by New Zealand Authors and Illustrators Gareth Ward and Nikki SladeRobinson
Gareth Ward
The author of ‘The Traitor and the Thief’ Gareth Ward has been many things over the years including a Police Officer and in the Royal Marines in England, a magician, a hypnotist and now an author.
Recently Gareth visited our school and talked to the seniors about his life and how he got to where he is today. Even though at school he had horrible grammar, english, spelling and handwriting, he had a passion for telling stories, a keen imagination and he had always dreamed of writing a book.
His book, The Traitor and the Thief has just been published as he was the winner of the NZ Tessa Duder book award. He had previously written three books and even though they never were published, he spoke to us about the importance of thinking positively and how you need to persevere with things to achieve your goals.
Everyone enjoyed his talk and we were all inspired by his work. We look forward to reading his book!!
Nikki Slade Robinson
Nikki Slade Robinson has been an illustrator and author for many years. She illustrates for a businesses, producing such things as cards, cartoons, and illustration for educational material. Her greatest love is drawing for children and has illustrated over sixty children's books.
When she visited our school she discussed her love of drawing and how important it is to use your imagination.
We love reading her books, especially The little Kiwi's Matariki and Ruru's Hangi.
Junior School Fire Station Visit
On the last day of term, the four junior classes enjoyed visited the Tauranga Fire Station. The classes had been learning how to be ‘Firewire’ and at the station they were treated to talks from the fire service personnel. Squirting the water using the high pressure hoses and sitting in the fire trucks, were special memories for all the children.
Thank you to all our wonderful parents who provided transport.

Whole School Assembly
We recently had our whole school assembly. Room 1 and 2 shared some of their fantastic art work.
There was also a special surprise for one of our students. Ella Ryan received the very special Peter Blake Young Leader award. David Lyon from Westpac in Katikati presented it to her.
We also celebrated the achievements of our fantastic runners at the Western Bay of Plenty and Bay of Plenty Cross Country Champs.
Mr Broadhurst also gave out his principal awards.

Welcome Back to Term 2
It has been a busy start to the term. There have been parent teacher interviews for the staff as well the start of the winter sport season for many children.
A lot of children are involved in school sports teams, which would not be possible without the fantastic support from our wonderful community.
The senior classes are also preparing for Sports Camp to begin in week 7. This term we are also lucky to have Go-4-it in the school as well as a visit from Harold and the Life Education Van later in the term.

All competed in 20 minute games of various sports, going from 10 in the morning to 5 at night, then after dinner Caged Soccer, Indoor Soccer, Indoor Hockey, Bowls, Darts, Chess, Draughts and Table Tennis were held, going well past 9 o’clock. We all had lots of fun playing and cheering on the different sports and really enjoyed the challenging week.
We came home with trophies for Kayaking, Shooting, Archery, Croque and Human Foosball, as well placing second in Caged Soccer, Soccer, Girls Indoor Soccer, Boys Indoor Soccer, Boys Table Tennis, Petanque, Triathlon, Cross Country and Boys Hockey. Overall we came third, behind Bethlehem College and Te Rapa. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Sports Camp and wish they could do it again, it is an exciting and amazing experience that we can take part in.

Junior Cross Country
On Monday, we had cross country. It was after lunch. Then we lined up. Room 7 girls went first, that was my sister. I cheered for her. She raced Room 13 and she came 7th.
Then it was my turn with my whole class. We got out of our seats and lined up on the line.
We waited until Mr. Broadhurst said on your marks, get set, go. I tripped over, but I got up and kept on running.
Soon I was coming second. On the next round I was coming first and I stayed in the front. I could hear everyone cheering and that made me even faster. When I was coming to the finish line I came first. I got a card that had one on it. Then I went to Mrs. Ryan and she said I did come first. My Mum and Dad were so proud of me. I did not believe I came first on my birthday. I got a big certificate. Then I went home and my cousins came for cake.

Kapahaka 2017
Kapahaka
Kapahaka has just started and all of us kids are really enjoying it.We’ve started learning about the Maori culture and Matariki as it’s coming up soon. We are so lucky to have Whaea Josie come in every Thursday morning to teach us. So far we’ve learnt some Karakia, Maori songs and we’ve just started to learn about a Haka Powhiri. Did you know that only the men can do a pukana? Ladies are only allowed to have big eyes and an upside down smile.

Web Page Reporters
This year we are lucky to have two fabulous, enthusiastic web page reporters.
They are Ella and Aileen. Please read their profile.
Hi, my name is Ella Ryan. I am 12 years old and will be updating you about what’s going on around the school this year. This is my second and unfortunately my last year at Omokoroa No.1 school and I love it here! I enjoy everything and like to have lots of fun. I hope that this year you enjoy reading about what we’ve been up to and how many amazing things we can get involved in.
Hi I’m Aileen Roessner. I just turned 12 and love writing and sport. I will be updating you on the school web page every now and then, on what we have been up to here at No.1. I have 8 siblings and, have lived in NZ for 5 years now. My parents are both from Germany even though I was born here but I can speak fluent german. I have been at No.1 since year 5, but last year I did a year of homeschool so this will sadly be my last year since I am now year 8. I hope you have a great year and enjoy reading the school web page.

Education Outside the Classroom - Camps at Omokoroa No.1
Our school prides itself on its wonderful 'Education Outside the Classroom' programme we provide for our pupils.
From Year 1 to Year 8 every child is given the opportunity to go on camp. Each year all classes go to a different venue to challenge and provide learning opportunities away from the school environment.
Please read about the experiences and enjoy the photos from each camp below.

Year 1 and 2
Junior Camps Room 7, 8, 9 and 13
We have recently all experienced a wonderful camp at Aongatete Lodge. This wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding support from all our junior parents.
It was a privilege working with such enthusiastic happy junior children. They loved all the challenges that were presented to them from bush walks to adventure challenges and even going back in time during a museum visit. They have since been producing plenty of follow-up work back in the classroom.
The junior teachers really appreciate having such a supportive parent community who embrace this type of memorable learning experience.
Room 7's and 13's camp at Aongatete Lodge was wonderful!
We fitted so much into our 2 day camp. The children used up lots of energy doing a beautiful, hour long, bush walk to arrive at the camp.
Once we were there it was full on with hut building, more bush walking, leaf rubbing, art activities, challenge courses, night walk and, the highlight of the camp-HOBO cooking!
On our second day we went back in time at the Katikati Museum, where the children dressed in 'olden day' clothes and learnt about school life 100 years ago as well as how to make butter and scones and to mow with push mowers.
All the children were fully involved and with the help of our amazing parents had an incredible camp.
Camp stories from Room 8
Aongatete Lodge: The Bush Walk by Alexandra Murray
Karen met us and explained about the animal footprints. After that we walked up the steep hill. I walked with my Mum and Alais. We followed the orange signs.
We saw fantail and robins. On our way I saw big high trees. The trees were huge. I saw the lovely canopy and the leaf litter. Signs told us about the birds. I even saw a possum trap with an egg in it.
The Adventure Challenge Course by Danika Burgham
I was challenged on the metal bridge where I was nervous and scared that I would fall, but mum helped me and I got to the platform safely. It was very hard to get across the metal bridge because it was made for big kids.
When I tried the rope crossing I needed help from my mum, because I couldn’t get to the platform without mum. It was very hard too.
Next I tried the wire rope. I was just tall enough to touch the top rope. Everything was hard for me but I did it. I was nervous but it was still fun.

Year 3 and 4
The Jiddles syndicate had a fabulous camp staying in Waihi. We had a wonderful time exploring the local area of Waihi, going for some beautiful walks at Karangahape gorge. We had gorgeous weather so any chance to dip ourselves in the water whether it be in the Waikato River under the swing bridge, at the stunning Shelly Beach in Bowentown or at Sapphire Springs, was very much appreciated!
We panned for gold and found out just how dangerous it was to work in the mines over 100 years ago. The Education Centre at the mine was amazing as was the Discovery Centre in Waihi.
All in all we had a great time and we wish to say a huge thank you to all the parents who helped make this year’s camp a success.

Year 5 and 6
Everyone enjoyed our Rotorua Camp. Day 1 was an eye-opening learning about DA Vinci and his marvellous inventions, followed by discovering history of Rotorua at the museum.
Once settled at Keswick Christian Camp we found it was a great place to have free time.
Next day saw a change of programme because of the rain, we worked at camp with the Year 6 Leaders Team Activities then off to the pools for a long swim.
Thursday, we were busy with our trip to Wai-o-tapu and orienteering activity in the Redwoods.
Our last day was fine so we visited Kurau Park and Haumoana Springs before returning home.
It was a great camp and thank you to the parents who came.

Year 7 and 8
Year 7 & 8 had a wonderful camp at the Blue Lakes with lots of amazing experiences:
I really enjoyed camp and my favourite activities were Waka paddling because I love to kayak and it was a bit different. I really liked swimming in such a great lake right across the road from camp. Also I liked the triathlon because I got to kayak and kayaking is one of my favourite things to do in the water. But my favourite thing that we did in the whole camp was the skiing and wakeboarding.I hope I get to try it again one day.
Bodhi Redwood
My favourite activities at camp were the water sports because I water skied, wake boarded and knee boarded. It was my first time wakeboarding and knee boarding. My other favourites were the Burma trail because I like being scared and having adrenaline rush through me at 100 miles per hour and the triathlon because it was really fun and I like sports. We were lucky to have loads of spectacular parent help.
Lily Pardy
Wakeboarding !!
It was finally my turn as I walked slowly into the water not knowing anything about how to wakeboard. I got my grip on the rope and I was pulled by the boat, But not in a good way so I let go. Then Duarne Lankshear told me that I needed to have bouncy knees. So I got my grip on the rope and this time I got out of the water for about five seconds then I fell onto my bottom. The wakeboard fell off and I couldn’t get it back on so I had to get onto the boat and put it back on.
Duarne helped me, but as soon as it was on he pushed me into the water and I belly flopped but it didn’t hurt because I had a life jacket and a wetsuit on. I got my grip on the rope once again. Then I gave Duarne a thumbs up and I was out of the water and onto my feet, this time my knees were nice and bouncy.
I felt like I was walking on water. I was so proud of myself and I think dad would have been too. When I got back to the shore everyone was impressed at what I had just done and I even got to see Emily get up also.
Overall I had an awesome time on the lake and I hope everyone else did too.

Special Visit by Ex-pupil
Our school was lucky to have an ex pupil, Joseph Reid, who has Cerebral Palsy, visit us and demonstrate how his 'eyegaze' computer programme helps him communicate. The programme allows communication with the world using the power of the eyes. The children were shown a video which Joseph handmade to show how this programme works and the difference it has made to his life. It was very enlightening and gave us all a greater understanding of what Joseph has achieved.
Jiddles Swimming Sports
On Friday 17th March we were very lucky to have a beautiful sunny day for the Jiddles Swimming Sports. There was a mix of swimming demonstration and races. Almost 100 people came to support the swimmers. The finale was the house relay which Motuhoa won by a whisker!
Senior School Swimming Sports
It was a sunny day for the Senior Swimming Sports. Many parents turned out to watch the racing. There were some very tight races. A wonderful time was had by all.
Junior Swimming Sports
It was a warm Friday afternoon for the Junior Swimming Sports. Room 7 went first and they demonstrated their confidence in the water. Room 13 and 9 followed. They had different races across the width of the pool, such as noodle, flutter board and gliding races as well as freestyle and back stroke. Finally it was Room 8's turn. They swam similar races, with more confident children taking part in length of the pool races. A wonderful time was had by all in the warm sun.
Young Leaders Camp at Aongatete Lodge
On the 13th and14th of February, eight Year 6 leaders from Omokoroa No.1 School went on a leadership camp to Aongatete Lodge. As we arrived, we were welcomed by Point School leaders who showed us to our dorms and helped us carry our bags. We got our name tags on and met in the main room where we learned the first basics of leadership.
We were each given a booklet to complete our camp work in. Soon we started our activities. We were split into three groups and sent off to an activity.
The most liked activity was probably the pancake challenge. It was a little like orienteering because we were given a map which showed us where the hidden ingredients were. Once we found the eggs, flour, sugar, milk and butter we started cooking. This activity encouraged leadership, because we had to take charge and study the map carefully. Next, we did the rock climbing where we had to respect the safety equipment. We were each given a harness and carabiner to put on.
We then partnered up with someone from another school. One person clipped themselves on the rope and the other person hooked to the belay. Next, we had to put a mark on the chalkboard so they could see how many people went up and down the wall with the rope. We then swapped activities and went on to the front field to do some team challenges. These involved leadership because we had to use teamwork, otherwise we would have failed the challenges.
The next day we were in our school groups, where we shared with other school groups, the leadership opportunities at our school. This showed active listening, as we listened to everyone's ideas, and were not allowed to interrupt. At the end we tidied up and packed things away with integrity, as everybody did something helpful. Using our iPad, we started a small movie about leadership which we will finish at school.
We learnt lots about leadership and are ready to lead in the future.
There were some keywords we had to remember: Integrity, Respect, Caring, Active Listening, thank you speeches and we even learnt about hand shaking.

Welcome back to Omokoroa No.1 School for 2017
Welcome to another school year. A very special welcome to the 24 new children and their families who have joined our school community.
Over the holidays the school has undergone some changes. It looks wonderful and fresh with its stylish new paint job.
Room 4 and 5 are currently being remodelled and we can't wait to see the completed buildings.
Please check out the new Syndicate Pages regularly to see what has been going on.
Merry Christmas Everyone
Water Day
Prize Giving Night 2016
The Dome was decorated beautifully for this special night. A night to celebrate the wonderful achievements during the year.
The night was also tinged with sadness as we farewelled out Year 8's and some Year 6's as they venture out and leave our 'safe nest'.
We were also entertained by the Junior School and the Choir. A wonderful evening was had by all.

Year 8 Social Dance 2016
We were so excited and nervous as we jumped out of the car at Te Puna School. The night had finally arrived and all our practising at school led up to this moment. Then we went in…
Everyone sat around the room and the Snowball Waltz began. We took our partners and danced the night away. We danced about 14 dances with other children from Omokoroa Point, Te Puna, Tauriko, Kaimai, Oropi, Matahui Rd and Pyes Pa Schools.

Playhouse Theatre The Fairest Of Them All
The Magic Mirror’s cracking up. Now Snow White’s a princess everybody knows she’s ‘the fairest of them all’ and he’s out of a job. After some bitter reflection he decides it’s time for Princess White to be sent back to the forest so he can once again be the mirror-to-the-stars.
With the help of a gruff goat-deprived internet troll, the Mirror launches a very 21st century poisoned ‘Apple’ attack to hijack her computer and cause social media mayhem.
When everyone turns against her, including her beloved prince, she turns to the only friends she has left, the seven dwarfs. Will they be willing to help her one more time and what shocking secret are they hiding?
This is the plot we enjoyed watching. Rebekah, Ben and Talia taught us the need to think about our use of digital devices in a very entertaining and thoughtful way.

ELGREGOE ( Magician and Ventriloquist)
YOU'VE GOT THE POWER
Elgregoe the amazing magician came to our school on Friday the 20th of August to talk to us about bullying and what to do when it happens. He performed some amazing tricks, teaching us values along the way. The floating man trick gobsmacked us all! He also introduced some of his cool friends, Tom the Cheetah and his colourful birds.
He taught us to...
STOP- Respect Others This is a bully-free zone! How do YOU want to be treated by others?
THINK - Be a Proud Responsible Student Who Cares- Think about what you do and say. It isn't COOL to watch, laugh or join in with bullies.
GO! - Be Courageous- You have the power to make a difference at this school. Have the COURAGE to do what is right.
It was an amazing experience.

Year 8 Ski Camp
Room 1 went to Ski Camp on the 15th and 16th September
Whoosh!!!! Suddenly I feel the tingling feeling of frozen snow, filling up my senses.. I’m up again, twisting down the mountain like a maniac. “Whooh hoo” I yell at the top of my lungs, as I swerve around and around, letting the puffy white snow fall around my skis. The sun is scorching down on me, so I decide to scoff a mouthful of snow.
The next morning I woke up to the sound of laughing and talking. I get ready and grab a bowl to be filled with Mr. Broadhurst’s porridge.
Before I know it we are half way up the mountain on our way for another great day of madness. Up, and down, and around, and especially falling over.
We all had so much fun and for many of us it was our first time at the snow..

Junior School Visit To Tauranga Astronomical Society
Recently the Junior School were very fortunate to visit The Tauranga Astronomical Society at Fergusson Park. Mr and Mrs Murray were impressed with the way the children could order the planets. Mr Murray showed us two models of how the planets go around the sun as well as one with the earth and moon.
They pulled the roof back from upstairs for the big telescope and the children and parents were able to see Saturn and its rings. Downstairs we could see the moon and its craters up close. It was a wonderful night, enjoyed by all.

Term 2 was a very busy term.
The school was bathed in beautiful sunshine, very different from the scene at Gallipoli 100 years ago.
On April 24 we held our Anzac Service involving all the school, parents and visitors. With the poppies the school was sent we arranged near our flagpole and assembled the school in front.
The ceremony started with the bagpipes playing the Lament, followed by students describing what happened in the wars and sharing names of Tauranga people who were killed in the war.
Each class laid a wreath they had made near the crosses. While this happened the last post was played and the New Zealand flag was lowered for respect of our dead, then raised again.
A very moving ceremony, which helped the students, understand about war.

Camps at No.1
Rooms 7/8/9 and 13 Camp at school Junior Happy Campers
All the Room 7, 8, 9 and 13 children have loved their overnight camp experience at school. This included two whole days of learning outside the classroom.
On Thursday, it was so wet that the zoo trip had to be postponed and thanks to Mr Broadhurst we were about to go to Lollipops Playland and then on to Fernland Spa, for a warm relaxing swim, before heading back to school.
We had a crowd of over 200 for the yummy fish and chip tea and sang songs under the dome to all the parents. Many thanks to our food organisers, Mrs Muir and Mrs Bond. It was a very wet night, yet many still braved the elements and stayed in tents, while others spent the night ‘sleeping’ in the classrooms. Again, many thanks to all those parents and grandparents who came for the sleepover.
After breakfast, we traveled by bus (with our careful bus driver Mr Broadhurst), over the Kaimais to Hamilton Zoo. What a great place to learn about all the animals, habitats and their characteristics.
It was great to mix with all the junior children and we had plenty of fun learning together and getting to know each other better.
A HUGE thanks to all the wonderful parents and grandparents who helped make the Room 7, 8, 9 and 13 camp such a success.

Room 6, 10 & 11 recently went to Epworth Camp near Lake Karapiro. We had an amazing time full of activity and learning. We visited the Maungatautiri Sanctuary and saw Kaka, Tuatara and the very rare Takahe, up close and personal! We went to Mystery Creek where we learned about Maori tools and early European life in NZ. Finally we went to the Timber Museum at Putaruru and walked to the beautiful but very cold Blue Springs near Putaruru.

Room 3/4 and 5 Rotorua Camp
Room 3, 4 and 5 visited Rotorua for this year’s camp. We stayed at Keswick Christian Camp. It had great facilities and engaging activities for the children. There were enough cabins for all and it was wonderful to have the food prepared for us. Team building challenges, cricket games and tyre building were some of the activities the children took part in.
We visited Rotorua Museum and had a swim at Blue Baths. Visiting Wai-O Tapu was enjoyed by all and it was especially exciting seeing Lady Knox geyser go up. The Redwood Forest was a highlight and everyone enjoyed taking part in the orienteering. We spent a lovely afternoon at the Blue Lake swimming, walking and generally having fun.
Many thanks to our great parents, bus driver and super teachers who organised the camp.
Parent's Guide to the InternetBelow is a 25 minute video which gives a great overview of children and internet use. Very interesting and worthwhile, especially given that we will be using many more devices from this term. Children are no longer 'going online' but they are online. It is really important that as parents/caregivers, you have an in-depth understanding of internet usage and what your child is sharing/doing.
